Metals and Nonmetals || Defination || Types || Uses || Easily explanation

Metals are those elements that form Negative ions when Undergoing a Chemical reaction, and Non-metals are those Elements that do not form Positive ions when Undergoing a Chemical reaction. Those Elements which have the Properties of both Metal and Non-metal are called Non-metals. There are two Categories of Elements, Metals and Non-metals. Nonmetals (such as phosphorus and sulfur) are Poor Conductors, while metals such as Metals (such as copper and aluminum) are good Conductors of heat and Electricity.

Metals and Nonmetals

Metals are Solid substances that Conduct Heat and Electricity, are hard, shiny, flexible, fusible and Malleable. Metals are those Substances which have a tendency to Donate Electrons. These are Electropositive in Nature. Metal is generally Considered to be any Substance capable of Conducting electricity at absolute Zero temperature. Many elements and Compounds that are not Normally classified as Metals become metallic Under high pressure.

What is a Non-metals

Non-metal is a Chemical element Which lacks most of the typical Metallic properties. Seventeen Elements are Widely recognized as Nonmetals. Non-metals have low density and very High electro Negativity. These range from Colorless gases like a Hydrogen to Shiny Solid metals like Iodine.

What is the Physical Properties of Metals

There are Five Main Physical properties of Metals are:

    • Metals are malleable and ductile.

    • Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

    • Metals are lustrous (shiny) and can be polished.

    • Metals are solids at room temperature (except mercury, which is liquid).

    • Metals are tough and strong.

There are Five Main Physical properties of Non-metals

  • Non-metals are brittle. They are neither malleable nor ductile.

  • Non-metals are bad conductors of heat and electricity (except graphite).

  • Non-metals are non-lustrous (dull) and cannot be polished (except iodine).

  • Non-metals may be solids, liquids or gases at room temperature.

  • Non-metals are neither tough nor strong

Types of Metals

Tha Main types of Metals are Iron , Steel , Copper , Aluminum , Zinc , Bronze, Brass , Nickel and Magnesium

Types of Non-metals

Non-metallic Elements in the Periodic table include Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Silicon, Boron, tellurium and Selenium

Uses of Metals

The Main Uses of Metals are

  • Iron or steel is used to Construct houses and bridges.

  • Aluminium wires are used.

  • The Liquid metal mercury is used in making a thermometer.

  • Zinc is used to Protect the iron from rusting through galvanization.

  • Gold and Silver are used for Making jewellery

Uses of Non-Metals

The Main uses of Non-metals are

  • Oxygen is used for breathing.

  • Chlorine is used for purifying water.

  • Phosphorous is used in crackers.

  • Non – metals like nitrogen is used in fertilizers.

  • Graphite is used as a good conductor of electricity.

  • Potassium is used in fertilizers.

  • Nitrogen is used by plants
